Sometimes I wonder why assumptions often win from curiosity.
We are so quick to assume rather than ask. in relationships, at the work space, looking at ourselves and problem solving.
When I propose this question to internet it says some of the following things:
-
we like efficiency, going for assumptions takes less energy than seeking new information
-
there is some comfort in certainty, curiosity brings the unknown. The unknown is not always easy to embrace
-
ego, admitting you might not know something feel less pleasant than confirming to the ego that we know it all
But do we need the above?
At every day wonder we like to encourage play and an ongoing learning mindset throughout life. Because, what do we really know about life? We know quiet a bit by now, but we tend to believe we know much more than we actually do. How does this connect to curiosity then? Life has so much to offer, that given it invites you to explore. Exploring requires a sense of curiosity. Curiosity requires an open mind, a humble spirit and the vulnerability to ask questions.
What are the benefits of curiosity?
Thinking you already know it all might limit options you are unable to see (for whatever reason). It can potentially harm relationships or never even getting to built them. You might not fully understand all of yourself, thus not stepping into your full potential. Problem solving is severely limited. Also in conflict resolution, curiosity matters and is immensely helpful.
Finally let's turn it around for a moment. How does it make you feel when:
- someone assumes rather then asks about you
- you are trying to solve an issue with someone but the other is not interested to understand your point of view
I hope this sparks something in you, let's keep looking at life/experiencing life with wonder!
Love,
Trisha
